Rumors of Changes

CMS-1500 Insurance Form

cms-1500

If and when there are changes made to the CMS-1500 claim form, it will be announced on the National Uniform Claim Committee web site (www.nucc.org).

As yet the NUCC does not definitively say there will be revisions in the near future however they recently accepted public comments on the CMS-1500 (see NUCC statement below).  Some expect the NUCC will revise the CMS-1500 when the country switches to ICD-10 codes, which are currently scheduled for implementation by October 1, 2013.

Using past experience as a guide, doctors, software makers and insurance companies are given a transition period and so a new form would not be required for at least 6 to 9 months from the date it is announced.  This gives affected offices adequate time to exhaust the supply of old forms, update their software and acquire new CMS-1500 forms.

Updates to the NUCC's 1500 Instruction Manual

January 8, 2010

Updates were made to the NUCC's 1500 Instruction Manual to clarify the reporting of property and casualty claims.  In addition, a new appendix, now Appendix A, was added to the instructions.  Appendix A is a list of specific provider terms and their definitions. These changes will be incorporated  into the July 2010 annual release of the instruction manual.
